Piaget’s account of sensorimotor development and the construction of object permanence remains the classical source for assimilation and accommodation [ Piaget , 1952 ] . Spelke’s synthesis develops the empirical case for core systems of objects, number, space, form, agents, and social beings [ Spelke , 2022 , 2023 ] . Saffran, Aslin, and Newport provide a landmark demonstration of statistical learning in infant speech segmentation [ Saffran et al. , 1996 ] . Bowler and collaborators connect behavioral shaping to compositional abstraction in RNNs and mice, and relate the resulting strategies to dynamical organization in the medial entorhinal cortex [ Bowler et al. , 2026 ] .

Drescher turns Piagetian constructivism into a working schema mechanism that can assimilate experience into an existing vocabulary and construct new concepts [ Drescher , 1991 ] . It is the closest historical precursor to the book’s developmental ambition. The categorical identification, equivalence, universal construction, and coherent-repair apparatus developed here should be read as a proposed foundation for that broader style of compositional discovery, not as a claim about the formal structure of Drescher’s implementation.

For modern machine learning, Lake and collaborators articulate a research program centered on human-like learning capacities [ Lake et al. , 2017 ] , while Lake and Baroni test systematic compositional generalization directly [ Lake and Baroni , 2018 ] . Ha and Schmidhuber illustrate learned predictive world models for control [ Ha and Schmidhuber , 2018 ] ; Rabinowitz and collaborators study learned models of other agents [ Rabinowitz et al. , 2018 ] . These works do not implement ORACLE. They isolate capabilities and failure modes that a categorical theory of developmental learning must explain.

For the particle-physics example, Wigner gives the representation-theoretic classification of relativistic particle types [ Wigner , 1939 ] . Yang and Mills introduce non-Abelian gauge invariance [ Yang and Mills , 1954 ] , while Weinberg’s lepton model is a foundational step in the electroweak theory [ Weinberg , 1967 ] . These sources establish the physical structures; the restricted-Yoneda interpretation developed here is an ORACLE reading of experimental theory formation.
