0 A Working Language for Creative Theory Change

Mathematics does not progress only by proving more theorems inside a fixed language. It also invents representations in which previously difficult questions can be composed, varied, and generalized. Euclidean geometry organized points, lines, circles, constructions, and proofs synthetically. Cartesian geometry connected those objects to numbers and polynomial equations. The geometric world did not disappear; a new interface made algebraic operations available to it [ Euclid , 1956 , Descartes , 1954 ] .

That transition is a useful miniature of infinitesimal creativity. Coordinates combine two conceptual systems. They open an exploratory space of symbolic calculation. At a broader historical resolution, they transform the accepted language of geometry and prepare the way for calculus, differential geometry, and later coordinate-free abstraction. The purpose of this chapter is to introduce the categorical and differential vocabulary needed to describe such changes precisely.

This is a working-language chapter rather than a compressed substitute for the theory that follows. It introduces each construction through the question it lets us ask: categories type composition, sketches declare a theory, functorial models interpret it, sheaves test contextual agreement, tangent structure describes local possibility, and double structure compares two classes of repair. Chapters 25 supply the formal development and delimit which parts are established mathematics and which belong to the proposed Double Involution ALgebroid (DIAL) research program.

. The mathematical language in this book separates four phases. Declare the current theory, its models, and its compositional promises. Diagnose failure with typed observers and interacting local probes. Construct a coherent finite proposal only after testing less-disruptive explanations. Admit the proposal through transport and evidence independent of its construction. Creativity can enter at several phases, but diagnosis, proposal, and admission should not be collapsed into one event.
