9.3 Accommodation and equilibration

Piagetian accommodation provides the developmental interpretation. The current schema first attempts assimilation: can observations be reconciled by changing a state or model inside \(\operatorname {Mod}(\mathbb S,\mathcal M)\)? If persistent disequilibrium survives those repairs, the learner may revise the schema itself. In the present framework proto-accommodation means proposing \(J\), not merely announcing a new verbal description; admitted accommodation additionally requires transport and independent testing.

Equilibration continues after the jump. The new representation must assimilate the evidence that motivated it, preserve or explain prior competence, and survive new tests. Thus accommodation is not a one-way escape from failure; it creates a new assimilatory regime whose stability must be demonstrated [ Piaget , 1985 ] .

. Prefer the least disruptive extension that resolves the registered obstruction. Escalate from model repair to observer change, ontology extension, or doctrine change only when simpler repairs fail under explicit controls.
