20.4 What DIAL does not explain
Any account of creativity that begins from a sketch inherits an observability assumption. Someone or something must decide which objects, maps, equations, and probes matter. Initial sketch acquisition partly addresses this issue, but it does not eliminate it. An apprentice can inherit a flawed doctrine; an observer can miss the decisive variable; a proposal language can make the needed extension literally inexpressible.
Several further dimensions lie outside the formalism unless they are added explicitly:
Embodiment and material practice. A sculptor, experimentalist, chef, or athlete learns from resistance, fatigue, instruments, and materials, not only from symbolic constraints.
Affect and aesthetic judgment. Pleasure, tension, beauty, humor, grief, and cultural resonance are not consequences of categorical coherence.
Historical and social contingency. Communities decide which problems, techniques, and artifacts deserve attention. Institutions, power, resources, and accidents shape what can be discovered and admitted.
Analogy and serendipity. Darwin’s use of Malthus, or an unexpected experimental artifact, may depend on a distant relationship that no local probe of the current sketch reveals.
Value and responsibility. A coherent, novel, and reusable theory may still be trivial, harmful, deceptive, or unjust. Admission requires normative governance as well as structural tests.
. DIAL is a compositional framework for creative processes expressible as an interaction between refinement of a maintained theory and controlled extension of that theory. It is not a definition of creativity in general. The framework can organize evidence for a revision; it cannot, by itself, decide what a culture should value or what a person will experience as beautiful, meaningful, or profound.
This boundary is a strength rather than an embarrassment. A useful formalism should state what it makes visible and what it leaves to other sciences. The neuroscience, psychology, sociology, history, and philosophy of creativity remain indispensable partners rather than phenomena to be compiled away.
