10.3 Where creativity enters

DIAL-X is not, by itself, a theory of creativity. It is a controlled mechanism for deciding when a maintained construction can be revised internally and when its space of admissible constructions may need to change. If its proposal language contains only familiar parameter updates, resets, and selections from a fixed catalogue, the resulting method may be adaptive and useful without being creative.

Creativity enters through the relation among an obstruction, a proposal language, and a reference space. Let \(\mathcal R_X\) record what is already available to the system—known artifacts, previously admitted theories, registered generators, and the current grammar of construction. A DIAL-X creative mandate is

where \(\beta _X\) declares one or more of Boden’s combinational, exploratory, and transformational modes; \(\nu _X\) is a novelty observer relative to \(\mathcal R_X\); and \(\sigma _X\) records surprise or explanatory gain. Value is not folded into novelty or surprise: it is tested independently by the epistemic certificate \(\mathcal C_X\).

The three modes locate creativity at different levels of the DIAL-X contract:

Combinational creativity.

Construct a previously unavailable composite from declared generators. The declaration may remain fixed, but the artifact must be new relative to \(\mathcal R_X\), not merely resampled.

Exploratory creativity.

Reach a new and informative region generated by the current rules, often by sustained tangent exploration or a new sequence of typed operations.

Transformational creativity.

Revise the generators, equations, factorizations, observers, or proposal grammar itself. This is the closest case to accommodation as theory change.

Thus accommodation is neither necessary nor sufficient for every creative episode. A novel recipe or adapter composition may be combinational while remaining inside a declaration. Conversely, switching to a previously stored schema may be accommodation without creativity. The strongest DIAL claim is more specific: a localized obstruction can provide a reason to search for a candidate outside the currently successful repair family, while typed proposal and admission rules keep that search auditable.

. DIAL-X does not turn every nonzero obstruction into a creative leap. The obstruction diagnoses pressure on the current construction; a proposal engine supplies candidates; a novelty observer locates them relative to a declared reference space; and independent admission determines whether any candidate is valuable. Remove any one of these distinctions and “creativity” becomes only a label for model change.
