The conceptual starting point is Toulmin’s original account of claims, grounds, warrants, backing, qualifiers, and rebuttals [ Toulmin , 1958 ] . The Argumentative Microtext corpus [ Peldszus and Stede , 2015 ] and Web-discourse argument mining [ Habernal and Gurevych , 2017 ] provide useful empirical settings in which argument components and relations are explicitly annotated.
For modern language models, zero-shot Toulmin explication [ Gupta et al. , 2024 ] shows that named argument roles can guide structured extraction, while fine-tuned LLM argument mining [ Cabessa et al. , 2025 ] represents the broader end-to-end extraction literature. TRACE [ Kim and Yang , 2026 ] uses Toulmin elements to assess chain-of-thought reasoning. SCoLT is adjacent to all three but asks a different question: after roles have been extracted, do warrants, sources, qualifiers, and rebuttals restrict and glue coherently, and can a proposed repair be admitted without silently changing the claim?
