10.6.1 Chain-of-Evidence as an admission architecture

ScientistOne provides a recent operational example of this distinction. Its Chain-of-Evidence (CoE) standard requires every research claim to trace through recorded supporting claims to a grounding source [ Meng et al. , 2026 ] . Citation, numerical, methodological, and conclusion claims are checked against literature records, evaluator outputs, code, and supporting claims. Its post-hoc audit separately tests score reproduction, specification compliance, reference validity, and method–code alignment.

From a CoLT perspective, CoE is a concrete base-level admission sketch. Its objects include claims, references, code, task specifications, and experiment logs; its arrows include cites, implements, reports, and derives from. A missing source, irreproducible score, or method–code mismatch is then a localized factorization failure rather than a vague defect in the prose. Repair can remove or qualify the claim, correct the implementation, or rerun the experiment before admission.

The comparison also marks a boundary. CoE deliberately covers claim types that current tools can verify, and some of its checks use language-model judgments. CoLT treats such checkers as registered observers: their outputs are evidence with stated semantics and uncertainty, not truth by definition. CoLT also retains rejected and abstained transitions, rather than requiring the final successful provenance path to stand for the whole reasoning record.

11. A tangent evidence chain asks not only whether a claim reaches an admissible source, but whether that support survives declared changes of seed, evaluator tolerance, data slice, ablation, or evidence source.

CoE therefore supplies an important base construction for verifiable autonomous research. LINCS adds the question of stability: whether the claim–evidence paths continue to compose under admissible perturbation, and which typed repair is licensed when they do not.
